Welcome to the Division of
Society, Culture, Media and Philosophy
The Division is dedicated to the conduct of quality research and the training of future leaders in three major areas which are at the cutting-edge of contemporary society and culture in Australia and other liberal democracies. They are: social sciences and philosophy; media, communication and culture; and indigenous arts and education. Because there is always a major event or achievement associated with the Division, at Macquarie we have come to be known as the Happening Division.
The website allows you to glimpse some small part of what is happening in the Division. It allows prospective students to understand some of the career paths open to them in social research, media, arts and communication, and in the community and public sectors. We make a great deal of our focus on generic skills necessary for such careers and for life in general: critical analysis, cultural understanding and literacy, communication, creative thinking and teamwork.
In our Division, you meet outstanding scholars many of whom are practitioners as well as researchers in areas such as filmmaking, creative writing, media, communication, ethics, social science and international and national public policy. They are only too willing to share their insights in our many workshops, conferences, and public forums, as well as in lectures and tutorials. You can glimpse all this activity on our website.
Our website connects you to our Division's e-journal in media arts and culture, Scan, and informs you about our established innovator, the Journal of International Communication. It tells you about our new interdisciplinary research centre, the Centre for Research in Social Inclusion. It keeps you updated about events and activities such as those undertaken by our indigenous writers, artists and intellectuals. It allows our alumni to keep in touch with what is happening in their areas and to consider how further to develop the skills they learnt in our degrees.
Our website however is only a virtual window to the happening Division. I hope it encourages you to visit us in person. I think you'll find that is much more exciting!
