On Friday 27 October, the Division of Society, Culture, Media and Philosophy held its inaugural Alumni Cocktail Evening in the Function Room in E11A on campus.
There was a gala atmosphere as the evening got underway, and alumni ranging from the very first graduation in the Division to the present were reunited, and chatted over cocktails and canapés. Guests were also invited to peruse the innovative and exciting Stephen Birch exhibition No Man’s Land, currently on display in the University Art Gallery.
Our Dean, Professor Mitchell Dean, delivered a welcome speech to the alumni, and voiced the commitment of the Division to its alumni and to fostering a supportive alumni community. Professor Dean recounted the founding of the playfully-dubbed ‘SCAMP’ in 1999, and noted how quickly the Division has gained a reputation for being a leader in social and cultural research, thanks to the dedicated staff of the Division, and the passionate research projects constantly being undertaken.
Professor Dean then welcomed our guest speaker for the evening, Dr Amanda Wise from the Centre for Social Inclusion, whose speech provided an inspiring example of the kinds of engaged and exciting research being conducted in the Division, and in particular, its Centre.
After the speeches, the alumni and staff mingled and reminisced about studying within the Division, and were updated with new projects the Division is launching, whilst the Boneham Trio provided a smooth, jazz soundtrack to the evening.
As the evening drew to a close, many alumni commented how much they had enjoyed the evening, and that they were especially looking forward to the Division’s next function in the near future. This positive response could be best summed up by the following note received from alumnus Lee Squires: “Thanks for a great evening. I caught up with some old friends and met some new ones.”
