Teaching Evaluation and Development Service (TEDS)

All academic staff are reminded to allow sufficient time to send in orders for the evaluation of teaching and course units in Semester 1, 2008.

The Teaching Evaluation and Development Service (TEDS) requires 10 working days to process all orders to ensure that questionnaires will be ready at the time specified for the evaluation. All orders received after 30 May will have to be collected from the Learning and Teaching Centre (C4C).

Draft Assessment Policy

A draft of the new Macquarie University Assessment policy will be circulated to Learning and teaching committee reps shortly. We are looking for feedback on the many issues that this document raises - so if your rep hasn't raised the issue with your Department, you should ask them about it. More soon. . .

Teaching Index

The Provost has also released a draft Teaching Index Policy which allocates funds to Departments based on learning and teaching activity. Again, this document will be circulated to L&T commitee reps for further dissemination and feedback.

2007 SCMP Teaching Awards

The Divisional Learning and Teaching Committee has decided on the winners
of the 2007 SCMP Teaching Awards:

  • Award for Excellence in Teaching at 100 level: Cynthia Townley
  • Award for Excellence in Teaching at 200 level: Mianna Lotz
  • Award for Excellence in Teaching at 300 level: Maree Delofski
  • Award for Excellence in Student Engagement: Willa McDonald and Peter Doyle
  • Award for Innovation in Teaching: Kalpana Ram
  • Award for Excellence in Teaching Support: Clara Wong
  • Award for Excellence in the Scholarship of Teaching: Nicole Matthews

The awards will be formally presented at  the Divisional Awards Night on 29th April.

tutors lounge

hi all,

just trying the new toy. But also had a question - I was assuming the "tutors' lounge" is for anyone who does tutoring (which includes many continuing lecturing staff), but maybe the idea is that it excludes those, and includes only those who do tutoring that isn't combined with lecturing. Just wondering. . .

CITATIONS FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO STUDENT LEARNING

Award
$10 000
Funding for conference presentations ($3000 per conference)

Overview
Citations are awarded to academic, general and sessional staff and institutional associates who have made significant contributions to student learning in a specific area of responsibility over a sustained period.There are no specified categories for Citations. A concise citation is used to describe the distinctive contribution of each nominee/s. Each citation is unique and reflects the diversity of ways in which university staff and associates contribute to excellent learning and teaching in higher education (from page 14 of Guidelines).

Eligibility
Teams and individuals may apply
No person may be include in more than one nomination
Recipients are not eligible within three years of receiving Citation

Criteria
Influencing student learning, engagement or overall experience
Been sustained over time and gained recognition from peers, institution and/or broader community

One or more of FIVE criteria (see Guidelines for full details). Note: number of nominated criteria does not impact assessment.
Criteria headings (Quoted from pp. 15-16):

  1. Approaches to learning and teaching support that influences, motivates and inspires students to learn.
  2. Development of curricula, resources and services that reflect a command of t Development of curricula, resources and services that reflect a command of the field.
  3. Approaches to assessment, feedback and learning support that foster independent learning.
  4. Respect and support for the development of students as individuals.
  5. Scholarly activities and service innovations that have influenced and enhanced learning and teaching.

Each criterion has associated detail (see Guidelines for full details). For example under criterion 1:

    This may include fostering student development by stimulating curiosity and independence in learning; contributing to the development of students’ critical thinking skills, analytical skills and scholarly values; encouraging student engagement through the enthusiasm shown for learning and teaching; inspiring and motivating students through high-level communication, presentation and interpersonal skills; enabling others to enhance their approaches to teaching (p. 15).

Lodgement
First page of must be Nomination Form (provided in Guidelines) with chosen selection criterion/a and proposed wording of citation (maximum of 25 words).
Written statement of contribution to student learning which specifically address one or more criterion and provides evidence.
Written statement is limited of FOUR Pages (see guidelines p. 8 for strict formatting requirements).
Statement contains FOUR parts:

  1. Impacted student learning, engagement and/or overall student experience
  2. Been sustained over time
  3. Been recognised

Two references with one the head of nominee’s faculty, department, school or administrative unit.
