Call for State intervention to manage childhood obesity
Over the last decade childhood obesity has risen to epidemic proportions in Australia. Experts suggest that around one quarter of Australian children are now overweight or obese and that this figure is likely to increase by at least one per cent per year. A Macquarie University academic argues that childhood obesity must be considered a moral issue that requires management by both parents and the State if it is to be curtailed. ![]()

Joan Kirkby an 'expert of international standing'
Associate Professor Joan Kirkby in Critical and Cultural Studies has been nominated by the Australian Research Council (ARC) College of Experts as an 'expert of international standing'. As a result of this nomination Joan has been asked to assess a number of Discover Projects scheme grant applications this year.
Dr Mandy Thomas from the Australian Research Council has thanked Joan for her valuable contribution to both the ARC and the international research community.
Project title:
Building Neighbourhood Community Harmony: Strategies for Local Government
The Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) has contracted Amanda Wise to undertake research into interethnic relations and racism in suburban contexts. The project will also explore the role of local government in building sustainable 'community' across and between different ethnic communities in local contexts, and develop innovative new models for local government to tackle interethnic tensions where they arise.
Action research will be undertaken in three local government areas: Ashfield, the Perth suburb where recent anti-Asian attacks have occurred, and a suburb on the outskirts of Brisbane.
The project will begin in July 2005 and run for a period of 12 months. The contract is for $98,000 and will employ a 0.8 research associate and several research assistants.
