The evening includes:

  • Cocktail food and beverages
  • Introduction to film screening followed by screening

Associate Professor Kathryn Millard introduces Charlie Chaplin's 'City Lights' 1931. Screening time 89 minutes.

As Paris based rapper J Five sings in 2004's chart topping 'Modern Times' 'People have to yell these days to get heard, but Charlie is the man, Charlie is the man.' 'City Lights' is perhaps Chaplin's most popular film. How did his Tramp come to be a global icon; across eras, cultures and geographical zones?

The recently restored DVD version of City Lights (1937, 87 minutes) will be screened.

Kathryn Millard is an academic in the Department of Media with more than 20 years' experience in the film and television industries as a Writer and Director. Her award winning feature films and documentaries include Travelling Light, Parklands and Light Years.

Kathryn is working on a project about the global appeal of Charlie Chaplin's tramp.

There is no charge for this function but for catering purposes Bookings are essential

Whose Voices: The Responsibility of the Storyteller in Cinema

Writer and filmmaker Richard Frankland (No Way To Forget, Harry's War, After Mabo) will screen and dicuss excerpts from his films. Topics under dicussion will include both the creative practices involved in Richard's filmmaking :

  • Researching screen stories
  • The rhythms of stories
  • Discovering and owning characters
  • The relationship between writing and directing

And broader questions of the cinema as an agent for social change.

  • The responsibilities of the storyteller
  • 'After Mabo' and the United Nations
