Philosophy seminar - Tuesday April 24

The next Macquarie University Philosophy seminar will be held on Tuesday
April 24, 11am-1pm, in Room 107, W6A.

PROFESSOR DANIEL NOLAN (Philosophy, University of Nottingham) will present a
paper entitled "The Theoretical Virtue of Conservatism".

Abstract:
Is a theory any better for an agent simply because that is the theory
that the agent happens to hold? Opinion is divided about this: both
the idea that it is a good thing to stick to one's epistemic guns,
and the idea that it is unwarranted bias to prefer a theory simply
because it is one's own, have some immediate appeal. In this paper I
offer what I hope will be a useful framing of the issue, and discuss
some arguments for and against treating conservatism as a theoretical
virtue.
