Overview
Research in the Division of Society, Culture, Media and Philosophy is characterized by its engagement with contemporary social and cultural events and practices and its belief that theory and practice are, and must be, interconnected. At the same time researchers in the Division engage in basic research into matters of being (ontology) and knowledge (epistemology), and have a special interest in ethics as it affects all aspects of our personal and professional lives.
Research in SCMP is inter-disciplinary, as can be seen in the membership and interests of Divisional Research Centres, including the Centre for Research on Social Inclusion, the Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism, the Agency, Norms and Values Research Centre, and the Somatechnics Research Centre.
The research excellence of the Division is evident in the regular
conferences, symposia and seminar series hosted by departments within
the Division, in the work of the Research Centres, and in the
publications and productions (including films and performances) of
individual staff members – some of which are shown here.
